121 Days to Go – Cranes, Cranes, Cranes! January 26, 2012

I am still hard at work on my 1,000 origami cranes project! Right now I have right around 700 πŸ™‚ Rob has helped, as well as my friend Kate from work. I’ve been using mainly scrapbook paper from Hobby Lobby, Michael’s and JoAnn Fabrics. However, I did decide to order some actual origami paper through a seller on Etsy. It took a couple of weeks, but my origami paper has arrived from Hong Kong! Check it out πŸ˜€

I wish I could read Chinese, I love how the characters look πŸ™‚

All of the papers have wonderful gold accents for a bit of sparkle

127 Days to Go – Thinking About the Cake January 20, 2012

Over the last couple of weeks I’ve been putting actual thought into how our wedding cake is going to look. So far I know how big it is going to be, and of course it’s going to be HUGE! It kinda has to be right? I’m a cake decorator after all πŸ˜€ Oh, and I should probably mention that I’ll be making it myself, even though people keep telling me I’m crazy. But seriously, how could I not? Anyway…I’m planning to do a 6″, 8″, 10″, 12″, 14″, 16″, with small columns in between so that I can wait to stack the layers until I’m at the reception. I don’t want to give away too much info about how it’s going to look because I want people to be surprised when they see it. We already have our topper as well, and it’s also quite tall as far as toppers go. This beast should be pretty impressive when it’s all said and done!

In the meantime, I will share a photo of a cake that is decorated with the exact same gumpaste flowers that will be on ours. I ordered them earlier this week and they came in today. They look fantastic in person! I really just want to make the cake right now!

192 Days to Go – Getting Back Into Action November 16, 2011

Wow, it’s been awhile since I posted a blog! But at the same time, it’s been awhile since we’ve actually done anything new with our wedding. We sent the save-the-dates out (finally) a few weeks ago, so that’s good! Other than that, we’ve been taking a bit of a break from working on things. I’ve been staying busy trying to make extra money by selling things on my Etsy shop. This is my busiest time of the year, and it takes up a lot of my time. But it’s all for a good cause! I usually use all the extra money to buy Christmas presents, but this year we are going to go a bit light on the gift-giving and I’ll be putting everything I make toward the wedding.

So, at any rate, I had a breakthrough with flowers for our centerpieces tonight! We were wandering around in World Market and I saw a branch of white cherry blossoms in a display for a table setting. I loved the way they looked, except for the fact that they were white. So we headed back to the actual flower department and I crossed my fingers hoping they would have a pink version. They did…sort of. It was a really unnatural-looking dark burgundy sort of color :(. But at only $7.99 for a branch, I refused to accept defeat! I decided to buy a branch of the white blossoms and see if I could color them myself. When I got home, I added a little pink paint to some water and tried brushing it on the petals. It did exactly what I hoped it would! It sucked right into the petal, it was just like working with watercolor paper! So I proceeded to hand-paint each petal of every blossom on the branch. After an hour of painting (while watching one of our favorite tv shows, Dexter) I had a cherry blossom branch that I was proud of :). Now I just have to figure out how many of those I need so I can dig in!

Here is the original flower color.

This shows how the water spreads once it touches the petal.

Here is a finished blossom πŸ™‚

277 Days to Go – My Dream Bouquet August 23, 2011

Well I’ve been going out of my mind for the last few days trying to find places both in town and online that sell the pieces that I want for my bouquet. As soon as the rain slows down I’ll be heading out to Hobby Lobby to see what I can find as well. I’ve also been scouring the internet for photos of bouquets that include lotuses and succulents, to no avail. I’m still a bit baffled that I can’t find any lol. It seems like such a natural combinations because they have very similar structures…Ah well, I’m feeling pretty good about having a unique bouquet πŸ™‚

So, my friend Angel suggested that I make my own bouquet in photoshop and I was like, duh! Why didn’t I think of that :). So I’ve spent my morning Googling up images of the bits I like and I put this bouquet together. I think it turned out pretty decent, so here’s hoping I can make it look like this when the time comes!

281 Days to Go – Thinking About the Bouquet… August 19, 2011

So I’ve been taking a break for the last few days from making favors and writing addresses on save-the-date envelopes. The night before last I could NOT go to sleep, which is pretty unusual for me. For some reason I was completely fixated on my wedding bouquet. All I could think was that I don’t want it to be traditional. I want to avoid roses as much as possible, they are way to conventional. Unfortunately cherry blossoms are basically out because they grow on trees…and there’s just something uncool about walking down the aisle with a bundle of sticks :). I also don’t want to use fresh flowers (call me strange, I don’t care!). I want to be able to spend time making it as beautiful as possible, and I don’t want to have to worry about it dying on me. I also want to be able to save it.

So at first I thought I would maybe try to incorporate my love of all things beaded. Anyone that knows me knows that I spend a lot of my time putting beads together to make jewelry :). So I started thinking, ‘hmm…I wonder if I could come up with some sort of beaded bouquet?’. I started thinking about this as soon as I laid down in bed for some reason. I ended up sitting on the couch Googling until after midnight. I really didn’t find any photos online that looked like the beaded bouquet vision I had in my head. Here’s some of the things I did find.

I also became obsessed with Googling for origami flowers. For our first Valentine’s Day Rob made me a dozen origami roses and they were fantastic (and I still have them! I really do love the idea of keeping my bouquet). I did find some patterns for cherry blossom origami flowers. Here are some photos.

However, I just couldn’t wrapΒ  my head completely around either one of those ideas. So I continued thinking about it all day today while I was at work, and while Googling yet again after I got home. But now I think I’ve finally got it πŸ™‚ I want to do a combination of water lilies/lotus (which works well with the ponds in the Japanese garden) and succulent plants (hen and chicks have a similar pattern to water lilies for example). I love the fresh but unusual look of succulents and I think it will make for a super awesome and unique bouquet. I can’t find any photos of those two things in a bouquet, but here are photos of them individually, check it out πŸ™‚

So now that I feel like I have a direction, the hunt begins for beautiful (and affordable!!!!) high quality artificial flowers. There is a brand called Real Touch that is awesome, but it’s hard to find in stores. So, wish me luck!!

299 Days to Go – Invitation Colaboration August 1, 2011

Now that we’ve picked our dream wedding venue, Rob and I seem to have gone full-tilt into wedding mode. Over the last couple of days our wedding invitations have begun to take shape. For my part of the project, I did a watercolor painting of a cherry blossom branch, incorporating our colors of teal, pink and brown. Rob then scanned the painting into the computer and is using the image on both the inside and outside of the invitation. He came up with a really badass design/layout! I would post a picture of it here…but it’ll be more fun to see them when they come in the mail :). I’ll definitely put a photo up after they go out. Now that we pretty much have the main design down, next he’ll be working on the Save-the-Dates. Hopefully we can start getting thoseΒ  mailed out soon. We want the people that have to travel from out of state to have as much advance notice as possible, especially since it will be during a holiday weekend. In the mean time, we are so excited with the way things are coming together, and we can’t wait to share it with everyone!

PS. This is not my painting by the way πŸ™‚

324 Days to Go – Official Engagement Photo July 7, 2011

We decided to finally do an ‘official’ engagement photo! This will be the one that we send off to the newspaper (one here and one back in Ohio) with our engagement/wedding announcement πŸ™‚ It took a lot of fiddling with my tripod and getting attacked by mosquitoes to get this photo.

Also, I’d like to note that Rob is one of the few people that makes me feel short ❀
