Another big item was checked off of our to-do list tonight! We headed out to Jared right after Rob got home from work (I somehow really like that place even though they have the most annoying jewelry commercials EVER). I really like that they have their lab right on-site though, which means that if we need work done to our rings it doesn’t have to be sent out anywhere and we get them back very quickly.Β  I had my engagement ring re-sized last year and got it back the next day, so awesome.

We found Rob’s ring first. He tried on a bunch of different styles in a few different materials that really didn’t fit the bill, but the last one he tried ended up being the winner. It’s titanium, which is pretty neat. I didn’t even know they had titanium wedding bands.

Rob’s titanium silver and black wedding band

I was sort of dreading trying to find a band to go with my engagement ring because of the unique design of my ring. It has an awesome filigree pattern on the sides, and I knew it would be difficult to find something that didn’t cover it up or take away from it. I tried on several that had diamonds on the band, but they just weren’t lining up right. Half the time there was an obvious gap between the wedding band and my ring because of the center of my ring being slightly wider than the band.Β  But the jeweler came to the rescue! He found me this awesome enhancer ring (that is basically two rings!) that my ring will go in the middle of. It looked so perfect when I tried it on! the band is thin enough that it doesn’t cover up much of the design of my ring, and basically makes a little platform for it. It was so sparkly and awesome πŸ™‚ And WAY cooler than what I thought I would end up getting.

This is my engagement ring, the design on the sides is what I was worried about.

We couldn’t be more excited!!!!!!!!!! Can’t wait till we get to put these beautiful rings on each others fingers πŸ™‚

Last night our bestest buddies Jim and Carley came over to help us finish our wedding invitation project. We had some delicious fajitas for dinner, then put our noses to the grindstone. We closed the last envelopes sometime after midnight, and it feels fantastic to have another huge project checked off of our list. They’ll be in the mail tomorrow!

Of course we have to send one to ourselves as a keepsake πŸ™‚

We are sending 105 invites out! That’s a lot of cutting, folding, gluing and stamping!

All packed up and ready to go to the post office πŸ™‚

After everyone gets their invites I’ll post a photo of how they look. I don’t want to spoil it ahead of time!

192 Days to Go – Getting Back Into Action November 16, 2011

Wow, it’s been awhile since I posted a blog! But at the same time, it’s been awhile since we’ve actually done anything new with our wedding. We sent the save-the-dates out (finally) a few weeks ago, so that’s good! Other than that, we’ve been taking a bit of a break from working on things. I’ve been staying busy trying to make extra money by selling things on my Etsy shop. This is my busiest time of the year, and it takes up a lot of my time. But it’s all for a good cause! I usually use all the extra money to buy Christmas presents, but this year we are going to go a bit light on the gift-giving and I’ll be putting everything I make toward the wedding.

So, at any rate, I had a breakthrough with flowers for our centerpieces tonight! We were wandering around in World Market and I saw a branch of white cherry blossoms in a display for a table setting. I loved the way they looked, except for the fact that they were white. So we headed back to the actual flower department and I crossed my fingers hoping they would have a pink version. They did…sort of. It was a really unnatural-looking dark burgundy sort of color :(. But at only $7.99 for a branch, I refused to accept defeat! I decided to buy a branch of the white blossoms and see if I could color them myself. When I got home, I added a little pink paint to some water and tried brushing it on the petals. It did exactly what I hoped it would! It sucked right into the petal, it was just like working with watercolor paper! So I proceeded to hand-paint each petal of every blossom on the branch. After an hour of painting (while watching one of our favorite tv shows, Dexter) I had a cherry blossom branch that I was proud of :). Now I just have to figure out how many of those I need so I can dig in!

Here is the original flower color.

This shows how the water spreads once it touches the petal.

277 Days to Go – My Dream Bouquet August 23, 2011

Well I’ve been going out of my mind for the last few days trying to find places both in town and online that sell the pieces that I want for my bouquet. As soon as the rain slows down I’ll be heading out to Hobby Lobby to see what I can find as well. I’ve also been scouring the internet for photos of bouquets that include lotuses and succulents, to no avail. I’m still a bit baffled that I can’t find any lol. It seems like such a natural combinations because they have very similar structures…Ah well, I’m feeling pretty good about having a unique bouquet πŸ™‚

So, my friend Angel suggested that I make my own bouquet in photoshop and I was like, duh! Why didn’t I think of that :). So I’ve spent my morning Googling up images of the bits I like and I put this bouquet together. I think it turned out pretty decent, so here’s hoping I can make it look like this when the time comes!

281 Days to Go – Thinking About the Bouquet… August 19, 2011

So I’ve been taking a break for the last few days from making favors and writing addresses on save-the-date envelopes. The night before last I could NOT go to sleep, which is pretty unusual for me. For some reason I was completely fixated on my wedding bouquet. All I could think was that I don’t want it to be traditional. I want to avoid roses as much as possible, they are way to conventional. Unfortunately cherry blossoms are basically out because they grow on trees…and there’s just something uncool about walking down the aisle with a bundle of sticks :). I also don’t want to use fresh flowers (call me strange, I don’t care!). I want to be able to spend time making it as beautiful as possible, and I don’t want to have to worry about it dying on me. I also want to be able to save it.

So at first I thought I would maybe try to incorporate my love of all things beaded. Anyone that knows me knows that I spend a lot of my time putting beads together to make jewelry :). So I started thinking, ‘hmm…I wonder if I could come up with some sort of beaded bouquet?’. I started thinking about this as soon as I laid down in bed for some reason. I ended up sitting on the couch Googling until after midnight. I really didn’t find any photos online that looked like the beaded bouquet vision I had in my head. Here’s some of the things I did find.

I also became obsessed with Googling for origami flowers. For our first Valentine’s Day Rob made me a dozen origami roses and they were fantastic (and I still have them! I really do love the idea of keeping my bouquet). I did find some patterns for cherry blossom origami flowers. Here are some photos.

However, I just couldn’t wrapΒ  my head completely around either one of those ideas. So I continued thinking about it all day today while I was at work, and while Googling yet again after I got home. But now I think I’ve finally got it πŸ™‚ I want to do a combination of water lilies/lotus (which works well with the ponds in the Japanese garden) and succulent plants (hen and chicks have a similar pattern to water lilies for example). I love the fresh but unusual look of succulents and I think it will make for a super awesome and unique bouquet. I can’t find any photos of those two things in a bouquet, but here are photos of them individually, check it out πŸ™‚

So now that I feel like I have a direction, the hunt begins for beautiful (and affordable!!!!) high quality artificial flowers. There is a brand called Real Touch that is awesome, but it’s hard to find in stores. So, wish me luck!!

302 Days to Go – Another Major Decision Made! July 29, 2011

For those of you that wander over to this blog from my Facebook, you’ve probably already seen me spamming photos of the Anderson Japanese gardens and now the fact that we’ve chosen to have our wedding there! We had originally intended to visit as many places as needed in order to find the perfect spot, but it turns out we just needed to visit one.

I think we both started falling in love with the place as soon as we walked into the door. Right away we were greeted with the amazing reception area (and after the long drive I even got to see how lovely the restrooms are hehe).Β  After that, every step we took while heading deeper into the gardens we fell more and more in love. Julie, the wedding/event coordinator, was very knowledgeable and easy to talk to. After our tour of the gardens she walked us through a big folder of information she had prepared, including a very helpful FAQ packet she had written herself based on questions from previous couples. Thinking about all the numbers and prices was a bit overwhelming, as well as slightly discouraging. Sticker shock has been a pretty prominent theme for us so far hehe. Another discouraging issue was the fact that another couple was also looking at having their wedding on the same day, but they hadn’t put down a deposit yet. That meant that if we decided we wanted to reserve that date we were going to have to act fast.Β  After we sat around and chatted for a bit, Julie gave us permission to walk around the gardens at our leisure for free. Pretty smart move on their part if you ask me, since the whole time we were discussing debt vs. dream wedding we were surrounded by the garden’s beauty.

We couldn’t stop talking about the gardens during our entire drive to the second venue of the day. We were even deciding what items we would order from the menu if that was the route we eventually decided to take. Then the fact that we were completely underwhelmed by the banquet center really started to make us wonder if anything else would ever measure up to our dream venue. We continued our discussion the whole way home as we crunched the numbers and tried to figure out what we needed to do to make our dream a reality.

Once home we immediately told Rob’s mom all about our wonderful day, also including the downside of course… the cost. We had talked briefly about wedding expenses with her once before and had already considered the possibility of taking out a loan from his parents (that we would pay back, at least in part, with money we will ‘hopefully’ receive as gifts at the wedding) as their gift to us. She brought that up again, and said that we had to make sure it was ok with Rob’s dad first. While Rob went to speak with his dad, I uploaded all of my photos to Facebook so that I could show everyone what we had been raving about.Β  Rob’s dad graciously agreed to loan us the money, and we all oohed and ahhed over the photos together. I’m so grateful and a bit overwhelmed that they are willing to help us out so much with this. Our dream wedding wouldn’t be possible otherwise. I don’t like asking for help, especially when money is involved, so I really had to swallow my pride on this one. I’ll feel a lot better when we start paying it off…

In the mean time…Rob and I headed back downstairs and he immediately fired off an email to Julie. He let her know that we were interested and also asked a few questions we hadn’t thought of while we were there. We decided to keep things on the down-low until we knew for sure whether we got the date, otherwise we would have had to move ours. I was so nervous all of yesterday because Julie was out of the office at an event and we couldn’t get ahold of her! Thankfully, sometime around 2pm today I got a call from my husband-to-be saying that everything was a go.Β  She emailed us the contract, which I just signed and initialed, and we’ll be sending that plus the deposit her way in the morning. There aren’t enough words in the thesaurus to describe how happy I am right now :). The fact that we didn’t have to stress out while visiting countless venues, we have a way to pay for it, we are having the wedding of our dreams and I’m marrying the man of mine…how could I not be completely beside myself with joy πŸ™‚

….Is it May yet?

344 Days to Go – Obsessing Over Colors… June 17, 2011

So initially, Rob and I both agreed that we wanted fuchsia, navy, silver and black to be our wedding palette. However, as time has marched on, I am starting to second guess things. I feel like those colors are too bold and sharp for aΒ  spring wedding. I want something soft and fresh and, well…springy :). So every day now I’m going nuts thinking about different color combinations. I keep making cakes at work and thinking about how much I love different color combinations. Then I get overwhelmed thinking about how many different things the colors are going to affect. Am I going to spend a bunch of money on favors, decorations, invitations, dresses, accessories and God knows what else and then hate it? GRR! So…the search begins, or continues, however you want to think of it.

This was the first color scheme we came up with:

I’m really digging this color scheme, I randomly found it last night whilst pouring through Google images:

And this is a color scheme I came up with while decorating cakes at work:

I’m sure it will change a million more times before things are all said and done πŸ™‚
